Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has today announced two major park 'n ride facilities to support the final stages of the light rail project.
"Light rail has achieved record passenger numbers since it opened in 2014.
"These passenger numbers far exceed initial projections (78 million passengers to date. Patronage today across the network is 15 percent higher than pre-Covid levels).
"Based on what we have seen since light rail started in 2014, I'm confident patronage will continue to increase.
"To support the final two stages (3 and 4) I am proposing two purpose-built park 'n ride facilities ... one in Burleigh and one in Palm Beach.
"We own the Palm Beach site and share ownership of the Burleigh site with the State Government."
The two sites are:
Joe Davidson carpark (between 8th and 7th avenues, Palm Beach); and
Alex Black Carpark (next to city library in Burleigh).
"The Joe Davidson facility has 149 spots on a single level. My proposal is for 709 spots across five levels.
"The Alex Black facility has 199 spaces and I propose a 949 space facility, set over five levels.
"If re-elected, I will take this proposal to Full Council and work out the funding and design as well as what contribution we may receive from other tiers of government.
"Both designs will utilise recycled materials wherever possible and will feature green-wall design whereby the exterior facade will be softened with green plantings.
"I've seen this design first-hand and it softens the architecture and adds to the facility's overall appeal.
"These two park 'n ride stations will add more bays for motorists wanting to access light rail."
Estimated costs for both facilities will be between $35-40 million.
